It Is That Time of the Year
Stock/Mutual Funds
As it is technically considered as less costly to make a gift from long-term stock/mutual funds (initial acquisition cost is usually lower than the current value) the process can take a bit of time. The LCMS uses The LCMS Foundation for processing stock/mutual fund gifts. Connecting with Becca Stackle, Gift Planning Coordinator for The LCMS Mission Advancement before any transfer will make a stock/mutual fund gift processed smoothly.
IRA's
Those who own a traditional IRA and are 70½ may make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) up to $105,000 in 2024. In addition, those who are 73 years old are required to take RMD from their traditional IRA and may use a QCD to meet part or all the RMD requirements. A QCD allows the IRA to transfer directly from the IRA account to one or more ministries. As these distributions are often anonymous, we would appreciate being notified so that we may offer our direct gratitude for this type of gift. Please note that a contributor does not receive a charitable deduction for this type of gift.
Contributor Advised Funds
This type of instrument is becoming more popular. Some contributors set up these funds with a financial institution and "advise" or direct distributions from these funds to ministry. DAFs resemble a private foundation but do not have the additional regulations and requirements that a private foundation requires. Like IRA QCDs, DAF distributions are often anonymous. Again, to allow us to properly thank the DAF owner, we would appreciate being notified of the gift and contributor. Also, like the IRA QCD, a DAF distribution is not considered for a charitable tax deduction. However, the original contribution to a DAF is an allowable charitable deduction.
